Shepherd College: My Alma Mater

Some journeys begin with excitement, others with escape — mine was a bit of both. My story with Shepherd International College started in JSS2, 2nd term, after I transferred from FSTC Usi Ekiti. At the time, I was going through a rough patch in my academic life — dealing with bullying and a generally disappointing school experience. I needed a fresh start, and I found it at Shepherd, thanks to a family friend, Bello Mercy, who recommended the school.

I didn’t know much about Shepherd before stepping through its gates. But it didn’t take long for it to feel like home. My first friend was David Paul, someone who welcomed me without hesitation. My first class teacher was Mr. Ilori, who helped me settle into my new environment with calm and kindness. That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter — one that would shape the person I am today.

Why I Chose Shepherd (Even If I Didn't Know It Yet)

While it wasn’t initially my decision to transfer to Shepherd, in hindsight, it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me. The school had a balance of discipline, academic focus, and extracurricular opportunities that made it stand out. It was a place where students weren’t just taught, but nurtured.

Academic Life

Shepherd offered a structured academic environment that helped me discover my strengths. I was always inclined toward technology and computing, and the school allowed me to explore that passion early on. But one particular event stood out among my academic experiences — and let’s just say it was “legendary.”

In SS1, my friend Uchenna and I did something most students wouldn’t dare: we hacked the school’s CBT system. It wasn’t malicious; we were just curious and wanted to understand how things worked behind the scenes. That bold move landed us in some hot water, but it also sparked my interest in ethical hacking and cybersecurity. That moment — half prank, half experiment — would go on to inspire my future in tech.

Extracurricular Experience

My time at Shepherd wasn’t just about textbooks and exams. I took part in several clubs that helped shape my interests and build lifelong friendships. I started out in the Decoration Club, where I enjoyed the creative side of school life. Later, I moved on to the Robotics Club, excited by the possibilities of innovation and engineering. Unfortunately, juniors didn’t get much hands-on experience there, so I transitioned again — this time to the ICT Club.

That move turned out to be perfect. The ICT Club became my second home. Alongside Uchenna, who had become a close friend by then, we explored projects, built skills, and engaged with tech in ways that were both fun and formative. It was in that club that I truly began to understand the power of technology.

Friendships and Brotherhood

Beyond the academics and clubs, one of the greatest gifts Shepherd gave me was friendship. People like David Paul, Uchenna, Goodnews, and many others became my brothers through thick and thin. We laughed, studied, explored, and grew together. These friendships made every day at school feel like a shared adventure — something truly special.

Growth and Challenges

In SS3, I made another big move — into the boarding house. Living on campus was a new challenge. It demanded discipline, routine, and a stronger sense of responsibility. Being away from home taught me how to manage my time better, make independent decisions, and connect with people on a deeper level.

Of course, there were hard days — moments of doubt, pressure, or stress — but every challenge was a stepping stone. From late-night reading to early-morning prep, boarding life toughened me up and helped me grow.

Legacy and Gratitude

Today, when I look back, I realize how much Shepherd College contributed to who I am. The lessons, the friendships, the struggles, and the victories — they all left a mark. Shepherd is where I first began to understand my calling in tech, especially in app development and cybersecurity.

I’m grateful to the teachers who were more than instructors — they were mentors. To my classmates, who became friends and co-creators. To Mr. Ilori, David Paul, Uchenna, Goodnews, and even to the boarding house matrons — thank you.
